Patriot Magnum 64GB, USB mass storage [Test]

Alexandre Vallieres-Lagace | July 6, 2009

Patriot Magnum 64Go 64GB USB keys flocked this year to begin and most of the companies in offering portable memory now. Patriot is often very innovative offers us a big beast of 64GB. You want space? There a. Speed? We will see in a few lines ...

Design

This key features a more industrial look than most USB keys with its trim single block of aluminum. Obviously, it is heavier than average, but the armor of aluminum also increases the strength! It is also larger than normal, which suggests to me that to reduce the price, Patriot has a greater number of memory chips smaller capacity. For example, they could put 4 x 16GB instead of 2 x 32GB.

As for Kingston that I reviewed recently, it allows to attach the cap to the back of the key to do by losing. Patriot has also added a cable male / female for those who need to plug in their USB sticks in the back of the computer and a strap to carry it in the neck.

Characteristic

  • Lifetime Warranty!
  • USB2.0

Performance

Finally the section that concerns us most! As usual I tested the key on MacOS X and Windows, and here is what I got:

Windows XP SP2 => 30.4 Mb / sec read | 18.00 MB / sec write
MacOS X 10.4 => 21.4 MB / sec read | 14.56 MB / sec write

All tests are performed with QuickBench 4 on both platforms. These figures are the best results all tests combined.

To see the results by size of test file, here is a chart that shows exactly these results under Windows and MacOS:

Positives and negatives

Positives

  • Key very solid (aluminum)
  • Sufficient weight
  • Extra useful (USB cable and rope)
  • Price

Negatives

  • Plug unsound
  • Speed

Conclusion

Patriot shows us once again that they are very good products. The Magnum is a very strong key generous capacity that will please many of you. If only those key high-capacity was faster, we would be Paradise, I would like to reach at least 30MB/sec read and write 25Mo/sec ... I recommend it for its ability whereas it is more affordable than thirty dollars than the competition.

In writing this article, I noticed that Patriot has released a 128GB key!
